Hookah Lounge & Bar
Slow coals and long conversations
House packed bowls, mezze plates and records spinning until close.

Since 2016 on Grove Alley
A room that runs on coals and records
MAQAM started as a single couch, a borrowed hookah and a record player in the back of a coffee shop. Nine years later the couch is a room of velvet booths, the coffee shop is gone, and the record player earned some company. The idea never changed though. Give people good smoke, honest drinks and a reason to stay a while.
Karim, who founded this place with his cousin Layla, grew up watching his grandfather pack bowls in a tiny coffee house, so the ritual matters here. Every bowl is packed by hand at your table, over natural coal, and checked on through the night. You will never have to wave anyone down for fresh foil.

Why people stay late
The things we refuse to cut
Packed by hand
Every bowl is fluffed, packed and lit at your table. We recoal it through the night so the draw never dies halfway.
Vinyl and oud nights
Thursday through Saturday, resident DJs blend oud jazz with downtempo house. Quiet enough to talk, warm enough to stay.
A real bar
Cardamom honey sours, rose mules and mint lemonade pressed to order. Mocktails get the same care as the strong ones.
Kitchen till late
Mezze and grills come out of the kitchen until 1 am, so nobody rides home hungry.
Taste first, decide later
From the list this season

Traditional bowls over natural coconut coal. Every order includes the hose, the tongs and someone who keeps an eye on your coal for you.

Word of mouth
What the regulars say
We came for the hookah and stayed for the playlist. The Thursday oud set is the best hour of my week.
